According to Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes, the suspect in the shooting was also a student at the school and was found deceased at the scene. He emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “Today is a sad day not only for Madison, but for our entire country.”
The police responded promptly to multiple 911 calls reporting an active shooter incident around 11:00 AM local time. Upon arrival, officers discovered the shooter dead and confirmed that no shots were fired by law enforcement. Multiple victims with gunshot wounds were located and transported to various hospitals; two victims were in critical condition and faced life-threatening injuries, while four others sustained non-life-threatening injuries. A handgun was recovered at the site of the shooting, though authorities have yet to determine a motive. The investigation remains in progress, and the suspect's family is cooperating with the police.
In response to the tragedy, a reunification center has been established adjacent to the school to help reunite worried parents with their children. Chief Barnes stated, “Every child, every person in that building is a victim and will be a victim forever.” He also highlighted that officers were nearby undergoing training when they were dispatched to the scene.
This incident prompted a massive emergency response, with 15 ambulances carrying victims to local hospitals. The Abundant Life Christian School, which educates around 400 students from kindergarten to high school, has received messages of support from local officials and the community. Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers expressed his condolences and prayers for the victims, educators, and community, while President Biden has been briefed and remained in contact with local authorities.
