Rio Carnival: Beija-Flor Triumphs in Spectacular Parade
The Beija-Flor samba school takes home the Rio Carnival crown with a vibrant homage to its late director.
Amidst the jubilant atmosphere of Rio de Janeiro’s Sambadrome, the Beija-Flor samba school emerged victorious in this year’s prestigious carnival parade competition, marking its 15th win. Thousands gathered to witness a dazzling display as the top 12 samba schools showcased their talents, with Beija-Flor narrowly defeating Grande Rio, who took second place.
The theme of Beija-Flor's parade was a heartfelt tribute to their late director, Luiz Fernando Ribeiro do Carmo, widely known as Laíla, who succumbed to Covid-19 in June 2021. Their performance dazzled fans with elaborate floats featuring pyrotechnic displays and performers donning striking costumes, including dancers dressed as devils.
Judged across ten categories by a panel of 40 judges, the competition was fierce. Among the notable contenders was Paraíso do Tuiuti, whose dancers adorned themselves with flamboyant feathers, embodying the spirit of the carnival. Vila Isabel presented a unique contrast with their ghostly white-clad performers adding an air of mystery to the vibrant festivities.
While Grande Rio endeared themselves to the audience vying for the top spot, the Mocidade samba school captivated spectators with their giant puppet and high-tech costumes inspired by their theme, "Back To The Future - There Are No Limits Dreaming." Following closely behind, Imperatriz made waves with their golden and white skull motifs.
Portela samba school paid homage to acclaimed musician Milton Nascimento, who waved enthusiastically at the audience as he paraded through the streets. In a stark contrast to the jubilation, Unidos de Padre Miguel found themselves at the bottom of the rankings and will not compete in the top tier for the next event, slated for 2026.
The Rio Carnival, a dazzling showcase of art and culture, continues to capture the hearts of its audiences around the world, celebrating Brazilian heritage in all its multifaceted glory.
