U.S. Shifts Palestinian Affairs Strategy, Ending Direct Channel in Jerusalem

In a move that reflects a transformative shift in U.S. diplomatic strategy, the newly appointed ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, has announced the closure of a direct communication line between the Office of Palestinian Affairs in Jerusalem and Washington. This decision, reported by officials under the condition of anonymity, signals a change in the level of importance attributed to Palestinian affairs by the current administration.

Previously, the Office of Palestinian Affairs operated with a special status that allowed it to directly send reports and communications to relevant U.S. agencies, enabling timely discussions on Palestinian matters separate from broader Israeli policies. This office, located in the historic consulate building in Jerusalem, has been responsible for engaging with senior Palestinian officials and reporting on significant issues concerning Palestine.

Huckabee's decision represents one of his foremost actions since taking up his post in April, being viewed as an effort to integrate Palestinian issues more closely with general embassy operations rather than treating them as distinct matters. Following extensive discussions with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the ambassador communicated this decision to Lourdes Lamela, the acting head of the Palestinian Affairs office.

During a press briefing, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed the merger of the Office of Palestinian Affairs into the overall embassy functions, a process to be overseen by Huckabee in the coming weeks.
