TEL AVIV, Israel — A drone launched from Yemen by the Houthi militant group struck Israel's Ramon International Airport, prompting an immediate closure of airspace over southern Israel and halting all flights, according to the Israeli military.

The attack on Sunday saw multiple drones launched at Israel, with some intercepted before reaching their target. At least one drone successfully hit the passenger hall of the Ramon International Airport, situated near Eilat, leaving one individual lightly injured from shrapnel, as reported by Magen David Adom, Israel's rescue service.

This incident is the latest in a series of aggressive actions that followed an Israeli airstrike that killed the Houthi Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahawi in Sanaa just two weeks prior. In his response, Houthi media officer Nasruddin Amer described the assault as a 'unique, qualitative military operation,' warning that 'enemy airports are unsafe,' and urged foreigners to stay away for their safety.

In the wake of al-Rahawi's death, the Houthis have vowed to escalate their military actions against Israel, releasing statements on social media that signal an intensified campaign against both Israeli targets and vessels navigating the critical Red Sea trade routes.

This recent strike adds to ongoing conflicts, as Israeli military operations in Gaza continue. It has been reported that more than 100,000 Palestinians have fled Gaza City amidst the Israeli operation, although some analysts find these estimates inconsistent, noting that only a fraction have been evacuating daily.

Attempts to mediate peace negotiations between Hamas and Israel have reportedly faltered, with Hamas demanding the establishment of Palestinian sovereignty as a condition for a ceasefire. Currently, negotiations are focused on potential deals involving hostages amidst increasing violence and humanitarian concerns.

As Israeli airstrikes continue, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza escalates, with local hospitals reporting over 64,000 fatalities since the outbreak of conflict. Efforts by international organizations to provide assistance have been greatly hindered amidst the chaos.
