A devastating tornado swept through St. Louis, Missouri, on Friday evening, leaving at least five fatalities and damaging over 5,000 buildings. The tornado, which struck around 2:30 PM local time, ravaged neighborhoods along a major roadway, uprooting trees, tearing roofs off houses, and downing power lines. This unfortunate event left about 100,000 properties without electricity.
Emergency responders have been working swiftly, with house-to-house searches conducted in the areas hardest hit. The St. Louis Fire Department reported rescuing three individuals from the collapse of the nearby Centennial Christian Church, leading to one of the deaths.
In the aftermath, the US National Weather Service confirmed that at least six other tornadoes occurred in Missouri and neighboring Illinois, with harsh weather conditions continuing to stretch eastward to the Atlantic coast.
In light of the destruction, a curfew was implemented from 9 PM to 6 AM in the most impacted regions, aimed at minimizing injuries from debris and preventing potential looting. St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer expressed her sorrow saying, "Our city is grieving tonight. The loss of life and the destruction is truly, truly horrendous." She emphasized the need for community support in the coming days as the focus shifts to ensuring safety and recovery efforts.
