Stanley Issues Recall for 2.6 Million Travel Mugs Due to Safety Hazard
Following reports of burn injuries, Stanley has recalled over 2 million travel mugs due to design flaws in their lids, impacting consumer safety.
After concerns that loose lids could lead to burn injuries, Stanley issued a recall of about 2.6 million travel mugs on Thursday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said. The recall covers all Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs sold in the United States from June 2016 through December, according to a statement by the safety commission. The defect that triggered the recall stemmed from threads on the mugs’ polypropylene lids, which “can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to detach during use, posing a burn hazard.”
The mugs, priced between $20 and $50 depending on the model, were available on platforms such as Amazon and at retailers including Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Target, coming in various colors ranging from white to green, and sizes between 12 ounces to 20 ounces. Reports indicate injuries from the loose lids, with 91 worldwide incidents including 16 in the U.S., leading to 38 individuals suffering burn injuries.
Stanley, a company headquartered in Seattle, asserted its dedication to "constant improvement" and creating quality products. The company urged consumers to discontinue use of the affected products and reach out for free lid replacements. The popularity of Stanley products has surged recently, with consumers even camping out for limited edition color releases at retail stores.
