Texas Man Goes Missing After 'Mistaken' Jail Release
Tory Dugas was set to begin a seven-year sentence when he was erroneously freed from Harris County jail.
Texas law enforcement is currently on the lookout for Tory Dugas, a 36-year-old convict who was inadvertently released from Harris County jail before he could begin a seven-year sentence. Dugas was slated to serve five years for assaulting a family member and an additional two years for evading arrest.
His unexpected release occurred around 4:30 AM on Sunday, following his stay in Harris County jail on unrelated charges that had been dismissed. The Harris County Sheriff's Office has launched a "thorough investigation" to uncover the circumstances that led to Dugas' erroneous release. Initial reports indicate that jail staff failed to properly document his state prison sentence, resulting in the mistaken belief that he was eligible for release.
Police spokesperson Jason Spencer noted to the Houston Chronicle that the oversight only became evident on Monday morning when officials checked the list of inmates scheduled for transfer to state custody. Authorities have urged the public to report any sightings of Dugas as they continue their search.
This incident is not isolated, as the Harris County jail has a history of mistaken releases. Earlier this year, a man facing capital murder charges was accidentally freed due to a case of mistaken identity involving a similar name. Fortunately, he voluntarily turned himself in after just 24 hours of freedom.
