Attackers unleashed a wave of violence against prisons in France, targeting facilities with gunfire and arson. This alarming trend culminated in an attack at the Toulon-La Farlède prison between Monday and Tuesday, where vehicles were set on fire and shots were fired at its walls. The attacks, confirmed by both authorities and prison worker unions, span across various regions of the country, indicating a troubling pattern.
The French counterterrorism prosecutor announced that an investigation would be initiated into this escalating violence, which reportedly began on Sunday. Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin expressed his concerns during a visit to Toulon prison, suggesting that organized drug traffickers are likely behind the coordinated assaults. Reports highlighted additional attacks in suburban Paris and southern cities including Villepinte, Nanterre, Valence, and Marseille.
Darmanin described the attacks as intimidations facing numerous prisons, ranging from burning vehicles to automatic gunfire. “The republic is confronted by drug trafficking and will take measures that will massively disrupt these criminal networks,” he stated. His comments mirror widespread concerns about systemic issues within the French penal system, such as overcrowding and violence, pointed out by the nation’s prison watchdog in 2023.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau condemned these violent actions, labeling the perpetrators as thugs, and mandated increased security protocols to protect both prison staff and the facilities themselves.
