Denmark Confronts US Diplomat Amid Allegations of Covert Influence in Greenland
Denmark's foreign minister has summoned the top US diplomat in Copenhagen, following a report that American citizens have been conducting covert operations in Greenland.
Denmark's public broadcaster DR quoted sources as saying the aim was to infiltrate Greenland's society and promote its secession from Denmark to the US, although it was unable to clarify who the men were working for.
Danish intelligence warned Greenland was being targeted by various kinds of influence campaigns.
Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen stated that any attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of the Kingdom [of Denmark] will of course be unacceptable, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations.
Despite previous expressions of interest from US President Trump to annex Greenland, Rasmussen emphasized that these actions threaten Denmark's sovereignty and must be addressed with seriousness.
"The BBC has approached the US embassy and the state department for comment, but the increasing interest from US officials has raised significant concerns within Danish politics," he added. "We will not be subjected to influence campaigns that aim to destabilize our relationship with Greenland.".
Furthermore, reports suggest that unauthorized surveys are being conducted in Greenland to identify supporters of US involvement, which the Danish government regards as an infringement upon its territory and authority.
