Survivor of Methanol Poisoning Shares Harrowing Experience Amid Ongoing Risks to Tourists

Calum Macdonald, a victim of methanol poisoning while vacationing in Laos, recounts his experience of sudden blindness and the tragic deaths of others due to contaminated alcohol. His story highlights the dangers associated with free alcohol in tourist hotspots and the urgent need for awareness and prevention.

When Calum Macdonald reached the Vietnamese border, a dazzling, blinding light obscured his vision, signaling a life-altering disaster. After an overnight bus journey from the vibrant Vang Vieng in Laos, where he and his friends indulged in complimentary whisky and vodka shots, Calum's condition deteriorated rapidly.

What began as an enjoyable trip spiraled into chaos, as the apparent side effects of food poisoning soon revealed themselves to be something far more sinister. "It was only when we sat in the hotel room in Vietnam that I realized we were already in the dark—though the lights were on," Calum recalls. Just 23 years old, he is now navigating life as a blind individual after becoming one of the survivors of a mass methanol poisoning incident that claimed six lives in Vang Vieng the previous November.

Calum was not alone in his plight; he lost two Danish acquaintances during this tragedy. As he campaigns alongside families of other victims who succumbed to the effects of methanol poisoning, they are calling for clearer travel advisories from the Foreign Office regarding the risks associated with alcohol in certain holiday destinations.

One of the deceased, Simone White, had reveled in the promise of a dream vacation just before tragedy struck. After indulging in free shots at the same hostel where Calum had stayed, she fell into a coma, ultimately leading to her passing. Her mother, Sue, received a grim call regarding Simone’s critical condition, a situation that has left a void that nothing can fill. "It’s very hard to come to terms with what’s happened," she shares.

Methanol, a highly toxic alcohol found in various industrial products, can potentially contaminate inferior alcoholic beverages. This is particularly dangerous in price-sensitive environments like Southeast Asia, where numerous poisonings are reported annually, according to Doctors Without Borders (MSF). Symptoms of methanol poisoning can easily be mistaken for a typical hangover, complicating timely diagnoses and treatment.

The gravity of methanol exposure is emphasized by survivors like Kirsty McKie, who passed away in 2022 after unknowingly consuming contaminated alcohol. Her companion Sonia narrowly escaped the same fate, grappling with survivor’s guilt and confusion. Other victims, such as Cheznye Emmons, faced similar dire consequences after consuming drinks that contained an astonishing 66,000 times the legal limit for methanol.

Calum shares practical advice for tourists: "Avoid free drinks and stick to local beers,” emphasizing the need for caution when traveling in high-risk areas. His own experience of becoming blind in the wake of such devastating loss has reshaped his view on life. "I felt a sense of gratitude, realizing there are others who have faced far worse."

Amidst these alarming accounts, the Foreign Office has acknowledged methanol poisoning as a serious concern and affirmed its commitment to bolster awareness and safety measures for travelers. As the families of those lost continue to champion for transparency and caution, the risks of methanol poisoning demand urgent attention from both authorities and potential vacationers alike.
