The Brazilian nun lived a life of dedication and spirituality, becoming a symbol of longevity.
Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas, a renowned nun from Brazil and recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest person, has passed away at the age of 116. Her religious community, the Irmãs Teresianas Brasil, announced her death on Wednesday, just weeks shy of her 117th birthday. Living in a retirement home in Porto Alegre, Brazil, Sister Inah was celebrated for her deep commitment to faith and community service, even receiving a blessing from Pope Francis on her 110th birthday.
The cause of her passing has not been officially determined; however, family members shared with Brazilian media that she died of old age. Despite facing diminishing health towards the end of her life, Sister Inah maintained a vibrant personality, only undergoing minor medical procedures such as cataract surgery at age 106.
Declared the world's oldest living individual in January after the passing of Tomiko Itooka, Sister Inah held the record during a time of rapid global change. When she was born, in 1908, innovations such as the Model T Ford had just been introduced, and the world was yet to experience the discovery of insulin or the first television demonstration.
The Irmãs Teresianas expressed their gratitude for her life of dedication and asked for divine comfort for her spirit, highlighting her impact on those around her throughout her extraordinary life.
