A hairdresser's impulsive act during riots leads to significant jail time as political tensions rise in Brazil.
In Brazil, the conviction of 39-year-old hairdresser Debora Rodrigues has raised eyebrows and sparked controversy. The Supreme Court sentenced her to 14 years behind bars for writing "You lost, idiot" in lipstick on a statue outside the Supreme Federal Court during January 2023 riots. This incident has been characterized as the "lipstick coup."
Rodrigues was part of a broader protest in support of former President Jair Bolsonaro, culminating in thousands of supporters aggressively targeting government buildings following his loss in the previous election. Justice Cristiano Zanin emphasized that her conviction was based on a range of offenses beyond just the graffiti, including property destruction and involvement in an alleged coup attempt against newly elected President Lula da Silva.
The court proceedings revealed that Rodrigues expressed regret for her actions. "I went to the protests and I didn't imagine that they would be so turbulent," she stated, professing her status as a law-abiding citizen throughout her life.
Defense attorneys highlighted that Rodrigues did not engage in violent acts or enter government buildings during the chaos, suggesting her act was spur-of-the-moment. Nonetheless, presiding Justice Alexandre de Moraes argued that Rodrigues actively aligned herself with those seeking to destabilize the government. Evidence of attempted concealment of communication led to further scrutiny against her.
The case has become emblematic for Bolsonaro supporters, with many viewing Rodrigues as a politically persecuted individual. In February, a viral video advocating for her cause gained traction on social media, furthering the narrative of victimhood among Bolsonaro's followers. The former president himself shared a post advocating for amnesty for those involved in the unrest, as he faces his own legal challenges related to the alleged coup attempt.
