Alec Baldwin's Criminal Case Dismissed, Paving Way for Civil Suit
Halyna Hutchins' relatives prepare to take legal action against Baldwin post-dismissal of involuntary manslaughter charge.
Alec Baldwin’s criminal case concerning the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins has been dismissed, allowing her relatives to pursue a related civil lawsuit. Noted attorney Gloria Allred, notorious for her assertive legal tactics, announced at a press conference in Los Angeles that Hutchins’ family is determined to hold Baldwin and others from the film's production accountable. According to Allred, the dismissal of criminal charges does not signify justice had been achieved for the Hutchins family.
Halyna Hutchins lost her life on October 21, 2021, when Baldwin's prop gun discharged during a rehearsal on the set of “Rust” in Santa Fe, New Mexico. During the incident, Baldwin, who was both leading the role and serving as co-producer, accidentally shot Hutchins, resulting in her death and wounding director Joel Souza.
Allred underscored the violation of due process rights for Hutchins’ family, insisting that it is crucial to illustrate the family’s close ties to pursue civil damages. Baldwin filed documents denying negligence allegations, seeking the suspension of the civil lawsuit.
Svetlana Zemko, Hutchins’ sister, stated that “Mr. Baldwin must be held accountable”, while in April, movie weapons supervisor Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was sentenced to 1.5 years after being convicted of involuntary manslaughter in connection with Hutchins’ death.
Allred did not hold back in criticizing New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez for choosing not to pursue the dismissal appeal, comparing him to "the Grinch who stole Christmas." Meanwhile, Torres’s spokesperson defended the decision, highlighting procedural irregularities that influenced the judge’s ruling. The spokesperson affirmed that the attorney general’s focus needs to be on other victims' cases currently seeking justice in Santa Fe County and beyond.
