Container Ship Grounds in Norwegian Garden, Neighborly Alert Saves the Day
A Norwegian man's morning took an unexpected turn when a container ship crashed into his front garden, narrowly missing his home.
In a bizarre turn of events, a man residing in Byneset, close to Trondheim, Norway, discovered a massive container ship lodged in his front garden upon waking early Thursday morning. The 135-meter long vessel, identified as the NCL Salten, narrowly missed Johan Helberg's house, sparking a frantic alert from a neighboring resident who witnessed the ship's alarming approach.
“It was around 5 AM when my neighbor rang the doorbell, and let me tell you, I usually don’t open the door at that hour,” Mr. Helberg recounted during an interview with TV2. “But when I looked outside, I was met with the sight of this enormous ship; I had to strain my neck just to see its top. It was simply surreal.”
Jostein Jorgensen, the neighbor who alerted Helberg, recounted how he was jolted awake by the ship's sounds as it sped toward the shore. Certain that Helberg would have already escaped outside, he knocked repeatedly and when he received no response, resorted to calling him directly.
The NCL Salten, flying under a Cypriot flag, was en route to Orkanger and was carrying 16 crew members at the time of the mishap. Fortunately, reports from the AFP news agency confirmed that all aboard were unharmed. Norwegian authorities are currently engaged in an investigation to determine the underlying cause of the incident.
Reflecting on the sudden turn of his morning, Mr. Helberg humorously noted, “It’s a very bulky new neighbor, but it’ll soon be on its way.” It’s worth mentioning that the ship had previously encountered grounding in 2023 but had managed to free itself subsequently. As the authorities navigate this unusual event, residents are already keenly awaiting the return of their peaceful routine.
