Ellen DeGeneres Relocates to the UK, Citing Trump's Re-election as a Catalyst

The beloved American comedian shares her newfound life in the Cotswolds and reflections on her past in the US.

Ellen DeGeneres has opened up about her decision to move to the UK after Donald Trump's re-election, revealing her desire for a more peaceful life amid troubling political shifts in America and addressing past controversies.

Ellen DeGeneres, the iconic US TV comedian and host, has made her first public appearance since relocating to the Cotswolds, England. In a chat held in Cheltenham, she disclosed that she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, chose to settle in the UK a day after Donald Trump was elected for a second term. Ellen described the UK as a place where "life is just better," emphasizing the charm and quality of life she and her wife have discovered.

The couple, initially planning to spend only a few months a year in the UK, felt compelled to remain following Trump's election. "We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis," Ellen said, recalling that her first reaction was, "We're staying here."

Ellen's public dialogue touched on her past experiences, including the toxic workplace allegations that led to her chat show's cancellation in 2022. While she acknowledged her blunt demeanor, she labeled the negative narratives surrounding her as "clickbait." Reflecting on her experiences in Hollywood, she expressed that being openly gay is still fraught with challenges. "It’s a really hard decision," she noted, emphasizing the societal hurdles that persist for many in the LGBTQ+ community.

During her conversation with broadcaster Richard Bacon, Ellen mentioned the need for ongoing advocacy, particularly in light of recent efforts by the Southern Baptist Convention to challenge the legality of same-sex marriage in the U.S. She and Portia are considering renewing their vows in the UK should such reversals occur.

Ellen’s new rural lifestyle has included farming activities, though she humorously admitted to selling her sheep after they proved to be elusive. She spoke fondly of the area's beauty, contrasting it with aspects of life in the US. "Everything here is just better — the way animals are treated, people are polite," she stated, expressing her delight with their choice to relocate.

On the subject of her once-ubiquitous talk show, Ellen revealed nostalgia and uncertainty about her future in entertainment. Despite missing the format, she recognized that the evolving media landscape poses challenges to its revival. "I would love to do that again, but I feel like people aren't really paying attention as much to televisions," she observed.

As Ellen navigates this new chapter in her life, she remains open to future possibilities while yearning for engaging experiences. "I want to have fun, I want to do something," she concluded, pointing to her chickens as a modest source of entertainment.

The evolution of Ellen DeGeneres's career and her bold move to the UK underscores themes of resilience and adaptation amidst changing realities.
