**Germany’s Merz Acknowledges Need for Enhanced European Defense Funding Amid US Trade Concerns**

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recognizes the past shortcomings of Europe in defense spending and aims to strengthen ties with the US and the UK.

In his first UK broadcast interview, he discussed collaborative defense projects, the Ukraine conflict, and challenges related to US tariffs on European exports.

Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz has publicly acknowledged accusations from the United States about Europe's inadequate defense investments, stating, "We know we have to do more on our own and we have been free-riders in the past." Speaking in an interview with the BBC's Nick Robinson, Merz emphasized the need for Europe to bolster its own security resources in light of contemporary geopolitical threats.

While visiting the UK to solidify defense relations under a new mutual treaty, Merz underscored that aligning efforts with President Donald Trump has been a priority. Their discussions focus on the war in Ukraine and the looming threat of tariffs on European exports. Merz has met with Trump three times since taking office in early May and described their collaboration as constructive, indicating they are actively coordinating their responses to global challenges.

Merz’s leadership has been greatly influenced by Russia's aggressive actions in Ukraine, compelling him to advocate for Ukraine's position even during his election campaign. His commitment was demonstrated by a visit to Kyiv shortly before assuming chancellorship, emphasizing the European perspective on the threat Russia poses to regional stability and freedom.

He reflected upon remarks made by US Vice-President JD Vance at the Munich Security Conference, acknowledging that Europe must take greater responsibility for its security, a sentiment echoed within his ruling coalition. With this in mind, Merz successfully implemented constitutional changes aimed at significantly increasing Germany's defense budget, firmly stating that "we are not strong enough."

As part of a new trilateral partnership with the UK and France, known as the E3, Merz aims to enhance both security and economic cooperation among major European powers. The recent signing of a bilateral treaty fortifies defense obligations, while also initiating joint manufacturing projects such as advanced military equipment. This collaboration is expected not only to strengthen their military capabilities but also to generate substantial economic growth.

The new pact is also pivotal in addressing irregular migration, which has been highlighted as a growing issue. The agreement will permit the UK and Germany to implement measures against illegal migrant smuggling, including reforms to legislative processes to eliminate opportunities for smugglers.

Beyond defense, Merz is focused on educational exchanges between British and German youth, recognizing the necessity for stronger cultural ties post-Brexit. The aim is to foster future generations who can nurture and deepen transnational relationships, with plans for direct rail links and student exchange programs prioritizing connectivity and cooperation.

In addition to these immediate objectives, significant discussions lie ahead regarding impending US tariffs on European goods, which threaten to disrupt trade relationships. Merz has labeled the proposed tariffs as detrimental, asserting that they jeopardize the export fabric of Germany's economy. He believes that President Trump is beginning to understand the ramifications at play and is optimistic about reaching a trade agreement that would benefit all parties involved.

Chancellor Merz remains adamant that Germany's defense strategy must evolve in response to changing global dynamics, asserting that it is essential for the nation's sovereignty and economic stability.
