Giant Waves Claim Six Lives Along Australia’s East Coast
Harrowing Easter weekend as soaring tides and strong currents devastate coastal regions.
At least six people lost their lives this past Easter weekend as fierce waves lashed Sydney and surrounding regions along Australia’s east coast, authorities reported. A significant low-pressure system triggered these alarming surf conditions beginning Friday, with measurements indicating waves exceeding 24 feet off the coast of Brisbane in Queensland.
In response to the dangerous conditions, Australia’s meteorological agency issued warnings for hazardous surf extending from Queensland to New South Wales, encompassing popular locations such as Sydney, Byron Bay, and the Gold Coast. By the time the advisory was lifted on Sunday, five fatalities in New South Wales had been confirmed, including incidents within Sydney, while the sixth occurred in the southern state of Victoria.
One tragic incident involved a man fishing in Wattamolla, about 20 miles south of Sydney, who was swept into the ocean on Sunday morning. The young companion he was with, a 14-year-old boy, was successfully rescued and taken to the hospital in stable condition. This marked the fifth drowning incident recorded in New South Wales since Friday, as all victims were believed to be engaged in fishing activities or walking along rocky coastal areas when the waves struck unexpectedly.
In addition to these casualties, authorities noted that another individual remained unaccounted for after being swept away while on rocks with friends at Little Bay Beach in Sydney on the same Friday.
Figures from Royal Life Saving Australia reveal a troubling statistic: 128 individuals drowned in New South Wales in 2024, with approximately half of those incidents occurring along the coastline. In another tragic incident in Victoria, a woman met her fate on Friday morning after being swept off rocks in San Remo, while a male companion remains missing after attempts to reach safety.
As emergency responders continue to search for missing persons, the stark reality of the ocean's powerful forces is a somber reminder of the importance of safety guidelines during adverse weather conditions.
