Kenya's Deputy President Hospitalized Amid Impeachment Trial Chaos

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's impeachment trial is in limbo as he is hospitalized, raising tensions in Kenyan politics.

Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been hospitalized and could not testify at his impeachment trial. His absence complicates an already contentious political landscape, where charges against him range from corruption to inciting ethnic divisions. With the Senate preparing for a crucial vote, Gachagua's fate hangs in the balance as he faces serious allegations just two years after being elected with President William Ruto.

Despite being present earlier, Gachagua's lawyer, Paul Muite, cited illness as the reason for his client’s absence during the critical testimony segment set for Thursday afternoon. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi expressed concern about the timeline, noting that the impeachment trial must conclude by Friday and could proceed without Gachagua if necessary.

Gachagua, who entered office in 2022 alongside Ruto, is accused of undermining the government and misusing power, with the National Assembly having overwhelmingly supported the push for his removal. Among the 11 charges against him are allegations of corruption and violating constitutional rights, with Gachagua pleading not guilty when the charges were read.

The rift between Gachagua and President Ruto intensified after a June incident where Gachagua publicly criticized the president's handling of civil unrest related to tax hikes, which led to the withdrawal of the unpopular taxes and cabinet changes. Lawmaker Mwengi Mutuse has emerged as a key figure, presenting evidence to frame Gachagua's actions as an extraordinary breach of duty during the Senate sessions.

Legal arguments presented during the trial indicate a fierce contest over the allegations, with Gachagua's lawyers dismissing the claims as exaggerated or unfounded. Tensions escalated as key witnesses faced tough scrutiny, including a former chief executive who testified about alleged intimidation related to government contracts.

Gachagua's prominence as a wealthy businessman from the influential Mount Kenya region raises the stakes, as public discussions around possible successors—governors and ministers within the ruling coalition—continue to circulate. Following the anticipated vote, if the impeachment proceeds, Gachagua is expected to mount a legal challenge against the decision.

As the political drama unfolds, the implications for Kenya's governance and democratic integrity are profound, with the outcome poised to reverberate across the nation's political landscape.
