Haidilao Offers Compensation After Disturbing Incident in Shanghai Hotpot Restaurant
The renowned hotpot chain responds to a shocking incident involving two teenagers urinating in their broth, ensuring guest satisfaction with extensive reparations.
In a surprising turn of events, China’s leading hotpot chain, Haidilao, has decided to compensate more than 4,000 patrons from one of its Shanghai restaurants following a shocking incident where two teenagers urinated into the broth of a hotpot. The incident emerged last month through a widely circulated video showing the two intoxicated 17-year-olds committing the act in a private dining room. Local police apprehended the individuals shortly thereafter, but fortunately, no one is believed to have consumed the affected broth.
In a public statement, Haidilao addressed the situation, apologizing profusely to its customers. The company reassured the public that they have replaced all cooking equipment and dining utensils while also disinfecting related items. The appalling incident occurred in late February, but Haidilao’s management only became aware of it after videos went viral on social media, prompting an investigation that took additional time to identify the specific outlet involved, amidst their numerous locations in the city.
While diners use personal hotpot equipment at Haidilao, sparking concerns over the hygiene of the services provided, the company has made it clear that broths are not reused for other patrons. Nevertheless, it remains unclear if the specific hotpot was thoroughly sanitized before being offered to subsequent customers.
“While we recognize that no compensation can truly address the distress caused by this event, we are committed to taking full responsibility,” Haidilao stated, outlining their reparative measures. Patrons who visited the affected outlet between February 24 and March 8 will not only receive a full refund but also cash compensation equivalent to ten times their bill.
Haidilao has rapidly grown to become a global player in the hotpot industry since setting roots in Jianyang, Sichuan. With over 1,000 establishments worldwide, the chain is famous for its exceptional customer service, including unique amenities such as manicures for women and treats for children during wait times.
