A British man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to drown his daughter-in-law in a Florida swimming pool. Mark Gibbon, 62, was on holiday with his family at the Solterra Resort in Davenport, close to Walt Disney World, when a disagreement over his grandchildren turned violent, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
Gibbon, from Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire, is accused of forcefully pushing the 33-year-old woman's head under the water multiple times, preventing her from breathing. Authorities have charged him with attempted second-degree murder and two counts of battery.
Sheriff Grady Judd commented, "It's unfortunate that Polk County attracts visitors from around the globe, but we expect holidaymakers to act responsibly, just like our local residents." Sheriff Judd added that due to Gibbon's uncontrolled anger, he may find himself facing a longer stay in Florida than originally planned.
The altercation reportedly began while the family was in the swimming pool at their rental home over a dispute regarding the grandchildren. Witnesses reported that a young girl jumped into the water in a desperate attempt to save the woman from Gibbon. The incident only concluded when two sisters vacationing next door informed authorities, leading to Gibbon's arrest and subsequent detention at Polk County Jail.
