UN Commission Claims Israel's Actions in Gaza are Genocide

A United Nations commission of inquiry has reported that Israel has committed acts of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

The commission's latest report indicates reasonable grounds to conclude that four of the five genocidal acts defined under international law have been perpetrated since the conflict escalated in October 2023: the killing of group members, causing serious bodily and mental harm, deliberately inflicting conditions that threaten the existence of the group, and preventing births.

Evidence cited includes statements from Israeli leaders and actions taken by Israeli forces, suggesting an intent to commit genocide.

Israel’s foreign ministry has categorically rejected these claims, referring to the report as 'distorted and false.' An Israeli spokesperson accused the experts on the commission of being aligned with Hamas and referenced the deaths of 1,200 Israelis caused by Hamas's actions as an example of attempted genocide by Hamas.

Since the onset of the conflict, more than 64,905 Palestinians have reportedly been killed due to Israeli military actions, with devastating consequences on infrastructure and living conditions in Gaza. Over 90% of homes have been reported as damaged or destroyed, resulting in widespread displacement, healthcare collapse, and famine conditions declared in Gaza City.

The commission, established by the UN Human Rights Council, aims to investigate alleged violations of international humanitarian and human rights laws. Led by Navi Pillay, former UN human rights chief, the commission’s evidence of genocidal acts focuses on Israeli policies and military strategies aimed towards Palestinians in Gaza.

The report claims that statements from Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog, indicate an intention to target not just Hamas but the broader population of Gaza. Pillay cited Netanyahu's comments indicating a willingness to bring severe destruction to Gaza as evidence of this intent.

The commission’s findings have sparked significant discourse amidst escalating tensions in the region, with calls for global action to prevent further atrocities, urging nations to act under the Genocide Convention.

Various international organizations and human rights experts have similarly accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, raising the profile of this urgent humanitarian issue.
