UN Urges Investigation Into Violence at Gaza Aid Site Amid Conflicting Accounts
The UN Secretary-General calls for an independent inquiry into the fatalities reported near an aid distribution center in Gaza, as conflicting claims arise between Israeli military and local sources.
Following a violent incident near an aid distribution center in Rafah, Gaza, the UN Secretary-General has demanded an independent investigation into the killing of Palestinians amidst conflicting reports about the involvement of Israeli forces. On Sunday, witnesses claimed that civilians waiting for food from the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) were shot at, resulting in numerous casualties.
According to the International Committee of the Red Cross, the regional hospital treated 179 individuals, with 21 confirmed dead. Meanwhile, the Hamas-affiliated Civil Defence agency reported that the death toll had risen to 31. The Israeli military has categorically denied any wrongdoing, asserting that its troops did not target civilians and labeling such claims as falsehoods.
In a statement expressing his horror, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for immediate accountability for those responsible for the violence. Israel's foreign ministry dismissed Guterres' remarks, accusing him of bias and neglecting to mention Hamas's actions during the ongoing conflict.
The Civil Defence agency's figures included serious injuries as they described around 176 wounded from what they allege was directed gunfire from Israeli forces. Further complicating the narrative, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reported that many patients included women and children, all claiming they were fired upon while approaching the aid distribution center.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have released drone footage purportedly showing armed individuals firing at civilians, although verification remains challenging due to news restrictions in Gaza. In its defense, the IDF stated that initial investigations indicate no shots were fired at civilians near the aid site.
As incidents escalated, additional casualties were reported on Monday, with three more Palestinians killed from Israeli gunfire near the same GHF center. In a separate attack, 14 individuals, including children, were killed in Jabalia, leading to increased condemnation and calls for accountability amid the ongoing military operations.
With the ongoing conflict in Gaza exacerbating humanitarian crises, the international community watches closely as the situation unfolds against a backdrop of diverging narratives and escalating violence.
