Israel-Iran Tensions Eclipse Gaza's Humanitarian Crisis
As the conflict escalates between Israel and Iran, Palestinians in Gaza face worsening conditions and increasing despair.
As the military conflict between Israel and Iran intensifies, voices from Gaza decry the quickly shifting global focus away from their severe humanitarian crisis. With Israel targeting Iranian nuclear facilities through airstrikes and Iran retaliating with missile attacks of its own, Palestinian civilians are finding it increasingly difficult to secure basic needs.
On June 14, 2025, reports surfaced of Palestinians struggling to obtain food and technology connectivity as the war raged on. Khalil al-Halabi, a 71-year-old retired U.N. official residing in a partly destroyed house in Gaza City, expressed concern over the world’s growing preoccupation with Iran, stating, “Gaza has become a secondary matter.” The escalating violence has led to the suspension of aid distribution sites across Gaza, leaving families desperate for necessities like flour—now selling for exorbitant prices, with street vendors charging over $350 for a 55-pound bag.
The ongoing Israel-Iran conflict threatens to undermine efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, where previous attempts at brokering peace between Israel and Hamas have proven futile. Al-Halabi pointed out that the preoccupation with Iran could embolden Israeli actions in Gaza with fewer international repercussions. Sharif al-Buheisi, a former university administrator in Deir al-Balah, echoed these sentiments, fearing that the shifting attention might allow Israel to implement controversial measures unopposed by the international community.
Furthermore, the new system for delivering humanitarian aid has been chaotic and often deadly. Local witnesses report that many desperate Palestinians, striving to collect food parcels, have been injured or killed in stampedes and clashes at aid distribution sites safeguarded by Israeli forces. Al-Buheisi highlighted his personal struggle with these chaotic conditions, revealing his hypertension prevents him from efficiently maneuvering through the crowded distributions.
Al-Halabi encapsulated the community's despair, stating, “We’re living through misery here. But what can we do?” The voices of Gaza grow louder amid global distractions, calling for renewed attention to their suffocating circumstances and plea for humanitarian relief.
