Rising Star: Botswana's Youngest Cabinet Minister Combines Beauty and Leadership

Lesego Chombo, crowned Miss Botswana 2022 and now serving as the youngest cabinet minister, is determined to champion youth empowerment and gender equality in her country.

At just 27, Lesego Chombo has made history as Botswana's youngest cabinet minister after her impressive achievements as a lawyer and beauty queen. With a focus on youth development and gender equity, she aims to tackle corruption and inspire the next generation in a nation facing significant economic challenges.

Lesego Chombo’s vibrant spirit and remarkable accomplishments are captivating as she moves from beauty queen to Botswana's youngest cabinet minister. Crowned Miss Botswana 2022 and Miss World Africa 2024, the 27-year-old is a practicing lawyer and an active advocate for socio-economic change. Her recent appointment as minister of youth and gender came as she impressed President Duma Boko, who led his party to an unexpected victory and sought a dynamic leader to address youth concerns in a country rich in diamonds but burdened by high unemployment rates.

“Never have I been prouder to be young,” Chombo expressed during an interview at the Ministry of Youth and Gender in Gaborone. As a specially elected member of parliament, she embodies the essence of youth representation in a National Assembly that includes just six women among its 69 members. With a growing population predominantly under 35, Chombo acknowledges the pressing issues facing her generation, especially the staggering youth unemployment rate, which stands at an alarming 28%.

Chombo's rise to political office was not a part of her initial plan; she was unexpectedly appointed by a president who had not met her before. “My journey to Miss World was intended to elevate my platform for social change, not to secure a cabinet position,” she noted. Through the Lesego Chombo Foundation, established after winning Miss Botswana, she pushes for support for disadvantaged youth and their families in rural areas.

Despite her achievements, she is acutely aware of the challenges ahead. There has been a rising outcry against gender-based violence in Botswana, where over 67% of women have reported experiencing abusive situations. Chombo’s stance on this issue has been scrutinized, particularly after she voted against a motion to establish “peace desks” for quickly aiding victims. She defends her perspective by arguing for the need for greater public awareness and effective implementation of existing laws.

Emphasizing a comprehensive strategy, Chombo aims to reform Botswana's anti-corruption efforts and enhance youth leadership in economic decision-making. The government is currently engaging in an extensive audit of its expenditures, promoting transparency and accountability, thus, ensuring that young entrepreneurs receive their fair share in state tenders.

Beyond fostering youth development, Chombo champions gender equity. Advocating for inclusive educational curriculums, she aims to instill a culture of awareness around gender-based violence from a young age, recognizing that parental behavior plays a role in shaping societal attitudes.

Chombo actively encourages discussions around men's mental health, seeking to counteract prevailing stereotypes within the patriarchal structure. “While I often speak of women's challenges, gender equity must include everyone,” she explained, pointing to the need for a holistic approach to gender-based issues.

Reflecting on her journey, she credits her mother and other strong women for her determination. “Women have to work ten times harder to prove themselves,” she shared, acknowledging the pressures young female leaders face. With an inspiring legacy left by Julia Morley of Miss World, who promotes social responsibility, Chombo is determined to create tangible, sustainable impact during her tenure.

As she embarks on her mission to bring effective change, Chombo remains grounded in reality. “Real success to me means seeing lasting impact, ensuring that the work continues after I’m gone,” she asserts, illustrating her commitment to the future of Botswana.
