In brief

Russian veterans are now being celebrated and integrated into the fabric of public life as part of a strategic shift by the Kremlin.

In the aftermath of the Ukraine conflict, the Kremlin is making a concerted effort to elevate the societal status of veterans, particularly those who fought in recent conflicts. This initiative aims to ensure that returning soldiers are met with appreciation rather than silence and stigma, a stark contrast to the experiences of veterans from Chechnya and Afghanistan.Take Ilya Rusinov, for example. After serving with the Wagner mercenary group and recovering from a serious injury, Rusinov took education into his own hands by creating a patriotic club called Zveno, or "Squad." This organization offers military training to various age groups, including young teenagers. Initially struggling to attract attendees, the club has seen an influx of interest and now assists other similar organizations as well. After achieving success with Zveno, he stepped away from his teaching position to focus on his passion full-time.Three years since he was wounded, Rusinov symbolizes a broader movement where the Kremlin showcases veterans in prominent roles. These veterans are now frequently addressing public gatherings and educational institutions, from kindergarten through high school, where weaponry education has recently become a mandatory part of the curriculum. In addition, they are lauded on billboards and appointed to high-profile jobs, reinforcing their status in the community.State-owned media is playing a significant role in this narrative shift too. Popular shows like “Ours,” which airs on Rossiya 1, are dedicated to highlighting veterans' stories, showcasing their acts of bravery and performance of military-themed songs. This media portrayal aligns with governmental objectives to foster admiration for veterans, as they become symbols of national pride amidst the backdrop of ongoing conflicts.Through these efforts, the Kremlin is not just rebranding veterans' experiences but strategically weaving them into the national consciousness, turning their narratives into lessons of heroism for future generations.
