In brief
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is currently recuperating in the intensive care unit after undergoing successful emergency surgery to address bleeding in his skull. The procedure took place in São Paulo following an MRI that revealed an intracranial hemorrhage, linked to a fall he experienced at home in October. Doctors reported that the surgery was "uneventful," and Lula, 79, is now stable, able to communicate, and is eating, with medical staff optimistic about his recovery.
The surgery was necessary after Lula experienced severe headaches and flulike symptoms, prompting a visit to the hospital. The operation, which lasted around two hours, successfully drained a hematoma without any adverse effects on his brain function or mobility. Dr. Roberto Kalil, who is overseeing Lula's care, indicated that the president will remain under observation for the next few days in the ICU but is making good progress.
