In brief
Tensions in Mozambique escalate after the top court ratifies the presidential election victory of Daniel Chapo, leading to violent clashes between protesters and police, resulting in numerous deaths and extensive property damage.
At least 21 individuals have lost their lives in Mozambique amidst escalating violence following the confirmation of Daniel Chapo as the winner of the presidential election. The unrest began as police confronted angry protesters who alleged that the election was rigged, resulting in clashes that have reportedly claimed the lives of two police officers along with 19 civilians. The interior minister, Pascoal Ronda, confirmed the fatalities on Tuesday while announcing that authorities have detained 71 individuals in connection with the violence.Human rights organizations have criticized the responses of Mozambique’s security forces, alleging they employed excessive measures against demonstrators since the elections held in October, including firing both live and rubber bullets into crowds. Reports indicate that sporadic protests post-election have resulted in over 100 deaths overall. The situation intensified after the country’s highest court upheld the election results favoring the ruling Frelimo party, which has held power since independence from Portugal in 1975. Angered by the court's decision, protesters in various regions took to the streets, igniting barricades with burning tires and obstructing traffic with debris. In a press conference, Minister Ronda disclosed that hundreds of structures including police stations, schools, hospitals, and living facilities were vandalized or looted. Notably, a penitentiary was also targeted, resulting in the release of 86 inmates. He remarked that such actions jeopardize public order and the foundational values of Mozambique's young democracy. “Defense and security forces must act firmly to restore normalcy and hold those responsible accountable,” Ronda emphasized, urging immediate action to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
