In brief

Rokia Traoré, a celebrated Malian musician, is currently imprisoned in Belgium after being extradited from Italy due to a two-year prison sentence related to child custody issues. The conflict has persisted since 2020, revolving around her non-compliance with a court order regarding her daughter’s custody, and efforts for an agreement between the involved parties are ongoing.

Malian singer Rokia Traoré, recognized as one of Africa's leading musicians, has reportedly been detained in Belgium amid a protracted and complex child custody dispute that has spiraled into legal turmoil. The 50-year-old artist was extradited from Italy to face an outstanding two-year prison sentence, according to AFP news agency reports. This saga began in 2020 when she was detained in France under a Belgian arrest warrant for her failure to comply with a court order regarding the custody of her daughter. After being conditionally released for several months, Traoré took a private flight from France to Mali, contravening a travel ban enforced during her legal proceedings pending extradition to Belgium. In October of last year, she was sentenced to two years in prison in absentia by a Belgian court on charges of parental abduction, accused of not delivering her child to her father, who holds the custodial rights. The drama took another turn in June when Traoré was apprehended at Fiumicino airport in Rome while arriving for a concert, due to the European arrest warrant issued in relation to her outstanding conviction. In August, a court in Rome greenlit her extradition to Belgium after her appeal against the extradition was dismissed. Since her arrest, Traoré has remained in prison. Her daughter, currently nine years old, has lived in Mali since she was four, with her father, Jan Goossens, reportedly expressing that he has had no contact with her during this period. When Traoré was initially detained, she was en route from Mali to Brussels to challenge the custody ruling.Mali’s government has expressed support for Traoré, citing her possession of a diplomatic passport. Her lawyer, Vincent Lurquin, disclosed that the singer intends to appeal the two-year sentence, which would instigate a new trial and possibly lead to a resolution that prioritizes the child's welfare. The state prosecutor's office in Belgium has confirmed that Traoré will remain incarcerated as her new trial unfolds.Rokia Traoré is celebrated not only for her musical achievements, having garnered honors like the BBC Award for World Music and the Victoires de la Musique World Music Album of the Year, but also for her humanitarian efforts, including her role as a goodwill ambassador for the UN’s High Commissioner for Refugees in West and Central Africa since 2015.
