In brief

Tropical Storm Trami has caused significant damage in Vietnam after claiming over 80 lives in the Philippines. While the storm reaches Vietnam with warnings of further floods and rainfall, officials continue to assess the Philippines’ devastating toll and recovery needs.

Tropical Storm Trami made its presence felt after hitting Vietnam on Sunday, having wreaked havoc in the Philippines just days earlier. The storm, which made landfall close to Danang, comes after reports indicated that at least 80 fatalities occurred in the Philippines due to extensive flooding and landslides caused by the tempest.Upon reaching Vietnam, Trami exhibited maximum wind speeds of 55 miles per hour, falling short of hurricane classification, as reported by the national meteorological agency of Vietnam. The storm's journey west across the South China Sea saw it transition from the Philippines, where disaster struck, to the central region of Vietnam on Sunday. In the Philippines, the storm’s aftermath left over half a million residents displaced, damaged nearly 28,000 structures, and caused power cuts across more than 150 municipalities. Additionally, the Philippine Office of Civil Defense reported that 34 individuals remain unaccounted for as rescue and recovery efforts face challenges, with responders hindered by floodwaters. As Trami progressed inland, authorities in Vietnam raised warnings of potential floods and landslides across coastal regions. The forecast indicated that certain areas south of Danang could see up to 16 inches of rainfall through the following evening. In anticipation of the storm's impact, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam grounded flights at four airports but announced on Sunday that operations had resumed. In conjunction with Trami's approach, another tropical storm named Kong-rey was reported near the Philippines, showing similar wind conditions. This storm is projected to skirt the coast of Luzon, the Philippines’ most populated island, in the upcoming days before moving toward southern Japan's Ryukyu Islands. In a reminder of the region's vulnerability to natural disasters, last month’s Typhoon Yagi resulted in at least 24 casualties in both China and the Philippines before traversing the South China Sea towards Vietnam's coastline.Reports are ongoing as local and international agencies mobilize to assist the affected populations and mitigate further disasters as Trami makes its way through Vietnam.
