In brief

In the face of a potential 25 percent tariff on exports, South Korea prepares for strategic trade discussions with the U.S., focusing on its significant shipbuilding industry to appeal directly to President Trump.

South Korea is gearing up for crucial trade negotiations with the United States as it faces the looming threat of a steep 25 percent tariff on several key exports, including automobiles and appliances. In an effort to mitigate the impact of these tariffs, South Korean officials are set on leveraging the country's robust shipbuilding sector to present themselves as valuable trade partners. As the world's second-largest shipbuilder after China, South Korea intends to emphasize its capabilities in maritime manufacturing to help U.S. President Donald Trump achieve his goal of revitalizing American shipbuilding. The forthcoming trade discussions are anticipated to incorporate a broader array of topics, with significant emphasis being placed on a potential agreement to buy vast amounts of American liquefied natural gas (LNG), which could assist in decreasing South Korea's trade surplus with the U.S. "Given President Trump's keen interest in enhancing shipbuilding cooperation, we believe this will serve as a pivotal negotiating tool in our talks," asserted Ahn Duk-geun, South Korea's trade and industry minister. His remarks highlight the strategic maneuvering South Korea is undertaking to ensure their interests are safeguarded amidst challenging trade dynamics. The finance minister, Choi Sang-mok, is poised to meet with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Washington next week, aiming to foster a cooperative dialogue rather than adopt a confrontational stance like that seen with larger nations such as China. South Korea's approach has otherwise remained focused on securing negotiations rather than retaliatory measures, reflecting a diplomatic strategy aimed at achieving favorable outcomes despite the challenging geopolitical climate.
