In brief

In a heartbreaking incident, a soccer match in Huancayo, Peru, turned fatal when lightning struck the field, leading to the death of a player and injuries among his teammates.

On Sunday, November 5, 2024, during a regional tournament clash between C.D. Juventud Bellavista and U.D. Familia Chocca, tragedy unfolded as players were leaving the field due to worsening weather conditions. José Hugo De la Cruz Meza was fatally struck by lightning, with the incident caught on video, showing the devastating moment when the players fell to the ground. Local media, including La República, reported that Meza was later pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Additionally, four other players sustained injuries and were briefly hospitalized but have since been released. Eyewitness Juan Chocca, who is Meza's brother-in-law, recounted the terrifying incident. He stated, “I was just walking out with Hugo hugging each other. I took three steps after letting go of him, and the lightning struck us.” The incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers posed by severe weather, especially during outdoor activities. Local authorities and sports organizations are urged to emphasize safety measures during inclement weather to prevent such tragedies in the future.
