In brief

For more than 40 years, Capt. Efrain Hallax has been at the helm of the Panama Canal, guiding vessels through one of the world's busiest maritime routes, all while navigating the complexities of changing political tides and significant geopolitical events.

Hanging from a ladder, Capt. Efrain Hallax carefully ascended to the deck of the Athina, a massive tanker preparing for transit through the iconic Panama Canal. This routine, although physically demanding, is second nature to Hallax, who has made his mark over the past four decades as one of the crucial pilots of this vital waterway—a connection between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.On this particular night in February, Hallax reported for work as the clock struck midnight, all while the political landscape surrounding the canal was shifting. Just hours earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump had opted to cancel a call with Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino regarding discussions over the canal's future, hinting once again at a desire for American oversight."The Panama Canal operates 24 hours a day, and whether it's Christmas or a rainy night, we are here to keep things moving," remarked Hallax matter-of-factly. His sentiments underline a commitment to the canal that has seen about 3% of global maritime trade pass through its locks. As one of the 316 designated pilots—of which only six are women—Hallax embodies the transition that took place in 1983, when Panamanians began to assume the roles that American pilots held since the canal’s inception in 1914. With steady experience in navigating both the waters and the geopolitical currents surrounding the canal, Hallax remains stoic in a time of uncertainty, underscoring a blend of professionalism and adaptability that has characterized his career.
