In brief
The English government plans to implement a ban on disposable vapes starting June 2025, targeting health risks for young users and environmental impact from waste products.
In a pivotal announcement made on October 24, 2024, the UK government revealed plans to prohibit the sale of disposable vapes in England, effective June 2025. This legislative measure, designed to safeguard the health of young people and diminish environmental harm, is anticipated to be mirrored in Scotland and Wales.Andrew Gwynne, the Minister for Public Health and Prevention, outlined the urgent need for this ban. “Single-use vapes have become the default choice for the majority of minors engaging in vaping,” he stated, emphasizing the alarming statistics that estimate around five million disposable vapes are discarded weekly across Britain. The proposed ban, which awaits parliamentary approval owing to Labour's significant majority, aims to avert the environmental risks associated with single-use products. The government pointed out that these vapes often lead to the leaching of hazardous materials — including plastic, lead, and mercury — into the environment. Moreover, the disposal and recycling of lithium-ion batteries used in these devices pose substantial risks, including potential fires within waste facilities.Mary Creagh, the environment minister, remarked, “Single-use vapes contribute significantly to waste and detract from the aesthetics of our towns and cities.” She highlighted that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to counteract Britain’s growing “throwaway culture.”The ban represents a crucial step in regulating the vaping industry, ensuring tighter controls on products marketed towards youth while promoting environmental sustainability.
