In brief
Amidst rising gang violence, the situation in Haiti has reached alarming new heights, leading to airport closures and international flight suspensions.
In a shocking escalation of violence, gang leaders in Haiti have ramped up their threats to the public, resulting in severe repercussions across the country. Last weekend, Joseph Wilson, a notorious gang leader associated with a coalition known as Viv Ansanm, declared a warning to the community through social media, promising consequences for those who dare to venture recklessly in the streets. The chaos unfolded swiftly. Within 48 hours of Wilson's proclamation, gunfire erupted as at least three U.S. aircraft were shot at upon approach to Port-au-Prince, prompting a swift closure of Toussaint Louverture International Airport. This closure left hundreds of passengers stranded globally, as the Federal Aviation Administration temporarily suspended all U.S. flights to Haiti for a month. Major airlines, including American Airlines, announced they would not return to the country before February. The turmoil did not end at the airport; it has seeped into the daily lives of citizens. Tragically, Dr. Deborah Pierre, a urologist, was murdered while getting into her car, leaving her family in grief. Additionally, reports emerged that a vigilante mob had attacked Doctors Without Borders personnel, tear-gassing them whilst preventing the transport of injured gang members. As fear grips Port-au-Prince, many areas remain desolate, with citizens terrified to leave their homes amidst the raging gang violence that appears to be worsening by the day. The international police force led by Kenya, intended to offer assistance, faces immense challenges as the public's safety and security deteriorate further in this tumultuous environment.
