In brief

Stephen James Hubbard, a 73-year-old American teacher, faces severe consequences after being wrongfully detained in Russia amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Stephen James Hubbard, once a free-spirited globetrotter, has found his life irrevocably altered after settling in Ukraine. The 73-year-old retired English teacher began his life’s journey from a quaint Michigan town, traversing through Japan and Cyprus, before ultimately arriving in the eastern Ukrainian city of Izium. However, when Russia commenced its invasion on February 24, 2022, Hubbard's life took a dramatic turn, leading to his arrest.Shortly after the invasion began, Hubbard was taken captive by Russian forces, accused of fighting for Ukraine. His plight grew more severe as he was transferred to at least five different detention facilities across Russia. In October of 2024, he faced a Moscow court and was convicted on dubious charges of mercenary activities, resulting in a sentence of nearly seven years at a penal colony.Though his case has flown largely under the radar, recent developments have brought it to light. In a statement last month, the U.S. State Department publicly designated Hubbard as “wrongfully detained,” signaling a shift in understanding around his circumstances. U.S. officials have asserted that the allegations against him are baseless and have called for his immediate release, emphasizing that his arrest and subsequent imprisonment should never have occurred.
