In brief

In its recent financial report, Tesla revealed a steep profit decline for 2024, attributed to fierce competition in the electric vehicle market. Despite slight increases in sales, the company struggles with reliance on a limited vehicle lineup and price-cutting strategies impacting overall profit margins.

Tesla has announced a substantial drop in profits for the year 2024, as global competition in the electric vehicle (EV) market intensifies. This shift comes as rivals in regions such as China, Europe, and the United States increasingly capture market share from the company spearheaded by Elon Musk. In the last quarter of 2024, Tesla reported a profit of $2.3 billion, a steep decrease from the $7.9 billion recorded in the same period in 2023. It is notable that the previous year's profits included a significant one-time tax benefit amounting to $5.9 billion. Excluding this extraordinary gain, Tesla's operating profit fell by 23% in the last quarter. Overall, Tesla's sales took a slight upward turn, increasing by 2% to reach $25.7 billion in the fourth quarter, compared to $25.2 billion in the corresponding quarter of 2023. However, for the full year, the company's total profit dwindled to $7.1 billion from $15 billion the previous year, with total sales rising marginally from $96.8 billion to $97.7 billion. Furthermore, while Tesla has broadened its portfolio to include batteries for energy storage—targeting electric utilities, businesses, and residential customers—these sales have been insufficient to offset weakening demand for its electric vehicles.Tesla’s current vehicle sales remain predominantly reliant on two models: the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y sport utility vehicle. As competitors offer an expanding selection of innovative electric vehicles, Tesla is facing increasing pressure to diversify its lineup to maintain its market leadership.
