In brief
The recent detection of two mpox cases in Britain, linked to a prior infection, underscores the need for public health monitoring amidst wider global health concerns.
The United Kingdom has detected two new cases of mpox, with the infections being linked to prior household contact with an already confirmed case, according to the UK Health Security Agency. Despite the appearance of these new cases, health officials maintain that the overall risk of widespread transmission remains low. Both individuals diagnosed with the virus, previously labeled as monkeypox, have been given access to the mpox vaccine and are currently receiving treatment at hospitals within London. “Given that mpox is highly contagious in household settings, it is not surprising to find additional cases emerging among individuals who have close contact,” noted Susan Hopkins, the chief medical advisor for the agency.Mpox, which has been endemic in regions of West and Central Africa for over half a century, experienced a significant outbreak in 2022, which impacted numerous countries including those in Europe and North America. This outbreak gradually subsided throughout last year, leading to a reduced number of cases in Britain and much of Europe. However, the current cases are connected to a more virulent subtype known as Clade Ia, which is causing severe outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the World Health Organization reports over 30,000 infections and approximately 990 deaths this year alone. Notably, UNICEF has highlighted that a majority of the new mpox cases in Congo involve children, raising further concerns about the virus' impact on vulnerable populations.
