In brief

Amidst global tensions following its invasion of Ukraine, Russia, under President Putin, attempts to reinforce its geopolitical stance by hosting a BRICS summit aimed at presenting a united front against Western isolation.

In the wake of the 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia faced severe backlash from Western nations that resulted in sweeping economic sanctions and diplomatic isolation. In a bid to counter these effects, President Vladimir V. Putin is set to host leaders from the BRICS group—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—this week in Kazan, Russia. This year, the summit has expanded its membership to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, reflecting an ambitious effort to showcase Russia’s global alliances.Originally a label coined by Wall Street in 2001, BRICS now encompasses nations that represent nearly half of the world's population and account for over 35% of global economic output when adjusted for purchasing power. This gathering serves to not only project economic strength but also to lure additional nations into an alliance that Putin envisions as a new global order that prioritizes the interests of non-Western nations."This summit is about Putin punching back," commented Alexander Gabuev, director of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center in Berlin. He added that the Russian leader frames the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as pivotal to dismantling the established Western-led world order and constructing a new paradigm. The stakes are high for Putin, who hopes that demonstrating solidarity among emerging market countries will undermine Western attempts to isolate Russia. The BRICS summit represents a crucial platform for Putin to articulate his vision for global geopolitics, one that seeks to challenge Western hegemony in favor of a multipolar world.
