Elliot Onil Eastman, a 26-year-old American residing in the Philippines, was allegedly shot and kidnapped by four armed men late Thursday night in the coastal town of Sibuco, located on Mindanao Island. According to local police reports, the kidnappers, disguised as police officers, invaded Eastman's home and attempted to take him by force. When Mr. Eastman attempted to flee, he was shot in the leg but was then forcibly taken and placed aboard a white boat that set out to sea.
The concerning incident has prompted multiple law enforcement agencies in the Philippines to initiate a “hot pursuit operation” to capture the kidnappers. The identities of the assailants remain unknown, according to Robert Agda, the information chief of the provincial police office.
Mr. Eastman had been living in the Philippines since May 2024 and frequently documented his experiences through a YouTube channel, focusing on the daily life of a foreigner in the often perilous region. He had previously traveled to the Philippines the year prior and married local resident Karisha Jala Eastman in July 2023, before returning to the U.S. for work. His lifestyle vlogs often acknowledged the dangerous reputation that coastal Mindanao holds for tourists, highlighting the stark contrast between his intended peaceful existence and the recent violence that unfolded.
As the investigation progresses, family members have expressed their deep concern for Mr. Eastman's safety and well-being. The police efforts continue as they strive to secure the safe return of the young American, illustrating a growing unease surrounding the safety of foreigners in the region.
