In brief

The International Court of Justice is set to review allegations against Israel regarding its humanitarian aid blockade in the Gaza Strip, following strong criticism from the United Nations.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague commenced crucial hearings on Israel's blockade of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, a topic of increasing concern amid rising tensions in the region. The United Nations has voiced its disapproval, asserting that Israel's ban has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation.Since early March, Israel has restricted the entry of essential supplies, including food and medical assistance, to apply pressure on Hamas for the release of hostages. The blockade has persisted despite the significant human toll of over one and a half years of conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of more than a million people.During a brief ceasefire in January, humanitarian aid was permitted into Gaza, but that relief effort has since been halted. Elinor Hammarskjöld, the UN’s top legal official, emphasized the grave consequences of the blockade, stating, "No humanitarian aid or commercial goods have been allowed into Gaza since the 2nd of March."In December, the UN General Assembly requested the ICJ to provide an advisory opinion on Israel’s obligations regarding humanitarian assistance. The hearings, set over five days, will include testimonies from around 40 governments, although a final opinion from the Court is not anticipated for some time. Israel has dismissed the proceedings as biased, choosing not to send a legal representative to the hearings.
