Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced plans to meet with former US President Donald Trump this weekend, with a focus on ongoing negotiations aimed at ending Russia's extensive military operations in Ukraine.

The scheduled meeting, which is expected to occur on Sunday in Florida, will delve into a 20-point peace plan proposed by the United States, alongside discussions regarding security assurances for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.

The Kremlin has revealed that a senior aide to President Vladimir Putin has been in contact with American officials, indicating a continued commitment from Russia to pursue negotiations. Despite this, Russia has maintained a level of skepticism, stating there is 'slow but steady progress' in discussions without fully acknowledging Zelensky's proposed troop withdrawals from contested regions.

Zelensky has articulated Ukraine's request for security assurances from the United States, highlighting the potential for a demilitarized economic zone in areas of the Donbas currently under Russian control. He noted the importance of not wasting time in the negotiations, indicating the urgency to secure a resolution before the year’s end.

The Ukrainian leader has communicated that the upcoming talks will address several key documents, including proposals for security guarantees and economic agreements, as the situation on the ground remains tense with ongoing military confrontations.

The meeting follows previous discussions on Christmas Day between Zelensky and Trump's top advisers, during which new ideas to advance peace negotiations were reportedly exchanged.

Despite the renewed diplomatic efforts, there remains significant tension, with Russia expressing concerns about external actions that may jeopardize negotiating progress, while the conflict continues to take a toll with reported casualties and military engagements over the holiday period.
