In brief

A California shooting incident raises concerns over safety and mental health support following the gunman's rationale behind the attack.

The rural community of Oroville, California, faced a shocking incident this week when a gunman opened fire at the Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists, injuring two young children aged six and five. The assailant, later identified as 56-year-old Glenn Litton, allegedly used a fabricated meeting with school officials as a guise to gain entry to the institution. The children have since been reported to be in critical but stable condition at a nearby trauma center.According to local law enforcement, the shooting, which took place around 1:00 PM local time, stemmed from Litton's grievances regarding geopolitical conflicts, as indicated in a note discovered at the scene. This note expressed his anger towards America’s involvement in what he called "Genocide and Oppression of Palestinians," alongside sentiments related to ongoing attacks in Yemen. Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea explained that Litton had a troubled past, with a history of mental health issues and numerous criminal charges, which included theft and fraud. After securing a seemingly innocuous meeting for student enrollment, Litton was able to tour the school before he veered off into a bathroom and began shooting.First responders found Litton dead by suicide with a handgun in proximity. The gunfire reportedly struck students outside a classroom, sending shockwaves through the small school community where only 35 children remained after the incident. These survivors were soon relocated to a nearby church for safety and reunification with their families.Sheriff Honea characterized the injuries of the young victims as "very, very serious," expressing gratitude that they were alive but acknowledging the challenging recovery journey ahead. Authorities have determined that this act was likely isolated but have remained vigilant, dispatching a state-wide alert to other Seventh-Day Adventist schools as a precautionary measure. The Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists is part of a global Protestant Christian denomination which boasts over 21 million members worldwide, with approximately one million residing in North America. The tragic event underscores urgent issues related to school safety, mental health resources, and the broader conversation surrounding gun violence in the United States.
