In brief
The situation surrounding Gaza's medical facilities remains dire as Israeli forces conduct airstrikes, leading to significant loss of life and resources.
Israeli airstrikes and gunfire near one of the remaining operational hospitals in northern Gaza have reportedly killed or wounded many individuals during a harrowing incident early Friday morning. Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital located in Jabaliya, described a chaotic scene, detailing how a series of airstrikes targeted areas surrounding the hospital. While the direct strikes did not harm anyone inside, subsequent intense gunfire resulted in casualties, including four medical personnel who lost their lives.According to Dr. Safiya, once daylight broke, bodies were found lining the streets around the hospital, contributing to what he deemed a "catastrophic" situation. He indicated that medical supplies are dwindling rapidly in the hospital, which continues to treat a growing number of casualties amid ongoing hostilities. This alarming situation was corroborated by Dr. Rik Peeperkorn, the World Health Organization’s chief representative for the Palestinian territories, who noted the chaotic evacuation process that left individuals in panic as Israeli forces ordered a mass exit from the facility.Despite the critical situation, the Israeli military had not offered an immediate comment on the events. Reports indicate the absence of a standard evacuation notice before the bombings, which often precede airstrikes, raising questions about the protocols followed in such volatile settings. The lack of clarity regarding the orders issued by Israeli forces has further complicated the already dire conditions faced by medical staff and patients alike in northern Gaza.
