At least six people — four Palestinians and two Israelis — were killed in a shooting in the West Bank, making it the deadliest single incident there in months. The clash occurred in the northern village of Tal, where residents reported that Jewish settlers began attacking their homes before Israeli soldiers arrived.
According to Palestinian eyewitnesses, about 30 settlers assaulted residential properties early in the morning, sparking hand‑to‑hand clashes. An IDF statement said soldiers responded after receiving reports that Israeli hikers were attacked and that a security guard’s weapon had been seized and used against Israelis, resulting in his death.
The IDF subsequently claimed they eliminated the “terrorist” who had carried out the attack and that three members of a single Palestinian family were killed in the exchange of fire. An Israeli soldier was also reported killed during the event, while two Israelis were wounded.
The situation has intensified when the Palestinian Foreign Ministry condemned the massacre, accusing the Israeli government of enabling settler violence. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to act with “full force” against those involved and called an emergency meeting with security officials. Defence Minister Israel Katz announced plans to demolish the perpetrator’s home and accelerate the legalization of unauthorized settler outposts.
In the broader context, the West Bank has seen a surge in settler attacks on Palestinians since the Hamas‑led Gaza war began on 7 October 2023. International law considers such outposts illegal, and the IDF’s presence is limited to areas under partial control by the Palestinian Authority.
The United Nations reports that since October 2023, 1,114 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, largely by the IDF, with at least 35 deaths involving settlers. In contrast, 41 Israelis, including civilians and security personnel, have died in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli operations since the war’s onset.
