Utah Firefighter and Family Killed in Sudden Flash Flood
Five members of a Utah family, including fire captain Spencer Long, lost their lives when a flash flood hit a remote campground in southern Utah. The fatalities occurred after a day of hiking on Friday, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
The family – Captain Long, his wife Katrina, and sons Reid, Thayne and Gage – were found dead in the campground near Bicknell. A daughter, who stayed home, survived.
Heavy rains are believed to have triggered the flood, local officials say. Emergency services responded hours after first arriving at the scene, but the sudden rise in water made escape impossible.
Provo Fire & Rescue confirmed the tragedy in a statement and has opened a GoFundMe page to support the grieving family. Firefighters and emergency responders are commending the crew’s quick response.
Statisticians say the risk of flash floods in the area is increasing with climate change, and researchers are exploring quantum sensor networks that might detect rapid water level rises faster than traditional gauges, offering potential lifesaving early warnings.
