In brief
Matilda Campbell, attempting to recover her phone from between boulders in Hunter Valley, ended up stuck upside down for over an hour before rescuers helped her escape after a grueling seven-hour operation.
In a striking incident highlighting the lengths people will go for their mobile devices, an Australian woman found herself in a precarious situation in Hunter Valley while trying to recover her phone. Matilda Campbell was enjoying a day out with friends in the picturesque wine region, located 150 miles north of Sydney, when her phone slipped and fell into a crevice between two large boulders. Determined to save her device, Campbell attempted to retrieve the phone but lost her footing and became wedged between the rocks, ultimately ending up hanging upside down. Her friends, realizing they could not assist her, promptly called emergency services as rescue became imperative. By the time paramedics arrived, Campbell had already been suspended between the boulders for over an hour. The rescue team faced a formidable task, necessitating the removal of several large boulders to create a safe route for extraction. They constructed a hardwood structure to stabilize the area and deployed a Tirfor winch, a powerful lifting device, to move a boulder weighing approximately 500 kilograms (over 1,100 pounds). After a seven-hour operation, Campbell was finally freed, suffering only minor injuries including scratches and bruises.Peter Watts, a specialist rescue paramedic with New South Wales Ambulance, expressed the uniqueness of this rescue operation, stating, "In my 10 years as a rescue paramedic, I had never encountered a job quite like this. It was challenging but incredibly rewarding." Unfortunately for Campbell, her phone remained trapped, a loss she later acknowledged with humor on social media, humorously reflecting on her adventure in rock exploration and expressing her gratitude towards her friends and rescuers. As the Hunter Valley continues to draw visitors for its stunning vistas and wine tours, Campbell's wild experience serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of exploring nature while being distracted by modern technology.
