WASHINGTON (AP) — In a significant event at the 2026 World Cup draw, President Donald Trump was awarded the inaugural FIFA peace prize, enhancing the spectacle with a unique political twist.

Trump has been publicly advocating for a Nobel Peace Prize and was widely expected to receive the FIFA recognition. FIFA President Gianni Infantino, a close ally of Trump, highlighted his belief that Trump deserved a Nobel for his role in negotiating ceasefires in regions like Gaza.

The certificate presented to Trump acknowledged his contributions towards advancing “peace and unity around the world.” As he received the award, Trump wore a gold medal and was presented a trophy symbolizing the global community.

Infantino remarked, “This is what we want from a leader — a leader that cares about the people,” as he handed the trophy to Trump, stating, “This is your prize, this is your peace prize.”

Trump expressed gratitude to his family and acknowledged the leaders of the other host nations, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

“This is truly one of the great honors of my life,” Trump stated during the event, which represents a blend of diplomatic acknowledgment amidst the backdrop of sporting celebration.

FIFA has framed the prize as a recognition for individuals who have made exceptional contributions towards peace, marking a shift from its traditional focus on sports. This award surfaces during a contentious week for Trump’s administration, marked by controversy over military operations against alleged drug trafficking.

Interestingly, the Nobel Prize for peace was awarded this year to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who, in her acceptance speech, acknowledged Trump's decisive support for her cause.
