WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — President Donald Trump revealed that Chinese President Xi Jinping provided assurances that Beijing would refrain from pursuing its longstanding goals regarding Taiwan while Trump holds office. In a recent interview, Trump reiterated his belief that the topic of Taiwan would remain dormant in U.S.-China relations during his presidency.
Trump mentioned that during discussions in South Korea, the contentious topic did not arise, primarily focusing on U.S.-China trade relations. He expressed confidence that Chinese leaders acknowledge the repercussions of any aggressive moves towards Taiwan while he is in charge, stating, He has openly said, and his people have openly said at meetings, 'We would never do anything while President Trump is president,' because they know the consequences. This statement emphasizes ongoing U.S. concerns regarding the stability of Taiwan, the self-governing democracy claimed by China.
The U.S. has a policy of strategic ambiguity on Taiwan, maintaining a careful position on potential military intervention should China seek to assert control, reflecting the delicate balance of power in the region. Trump, when asked whether he would order military action to defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack, did not provide a definitive answer, stating, You’ll find out if it happens. He further acknowledged Xi's comprehension of the high stakes involved should tensions escalate.
Meanwhile, Chinese officials have remained firm on their stance regarding Taiwan's status, emphasizing that the Taiwan issue is a core matter of national interest and should be resolved internally by the Chinese populace.
