COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The murder trial of an Ohio police officer continues Thursday in the 2023 shooting death of a pregnant Black mother confronted about an accusation of shoplifting.

Connor Grubb is charged with murder, involuntary manslaughter and felonious assault in the death of Ta’Kiya Young, 21, and her unborn daughter. The trial, held in Franklin County Common Pleas Court, has seen Grubb's written statement presented, with deliberations on whether he will take the stand.

Grubb and another officer approached Young’s vehicle on August 24, 2023, in response to allegations of theft. Video evidence shows Young partially rolling down her window and Grubb firing a shot through her windshield after she drove toward him. A special prosecutor asserted that Grubb lacked justification, as Young posed no immediate threat during the encounter.

In his defense, Grubb argued that Young's actions indicated a potential threat, stating he was in a position to protect others. During testimony, the family's attorney claimed the situation escalated due to the officer's approach and the premature drawing of his firearm. As the jury reviewed bodycam footage, some family members left the courtroom in distress.

Ultimately, the trial emphasizes questions around police conduct and the handling of encounters with the public, particularly regarding the use of lethal force.
