Tornadoes strike Atlantic Beach, New York, and Delaware

A tornado outbreak rattled parts of the Northeast, striking Atlantic Beach in Long Island and bringing heavy rain, gale‑force winds and severe thunderstorm activity to the Delaware capital.

The storm knocked out power across several neighborhoods, leaving thousands without electricity overnight, while the accompanying rainfall caused localized flooding in low‑lying areas.

Police in Atlantic Beach reported no serious injuries and only minor property damage. The tornado was rated EF‑0, with winds around 75 MPH and a damage path width of roughly 150 feet.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for the region until Friday, urging residents to stay indoors until the threat passes. Meteorologists attribute the unexpected outbreak to warm air masses from the Gulf combined with an upper‑level jet, creating super‑cell conditions that favor tornadogenesis.

Emergency crews continue to assess damage and restore power. Residents are advised to avoid flooded streets and use backup generators cautiously.
